Aga Electric Conversion

There are two options for converting your Aga to electric – the traditional ‘always on’ 13amp conversion and the controllable ElectricKit ‘Classic’ conversion. Further information can be found below including our handy comparison chart or contact us as we are happy to offer advice as to which conversion will suit your requirements.

Aga ElectricKit Conversion

  • Flexible operation
  • Easy to use controls
  • Up to 80% reduction in annual running cost
  • Fast heat up - improved recovery times
  • Timeclock and 'smart' control options can be incorporated
  • Improved comfort levels - warm in winter, cool in summer

The ElectricKit ‘Classic’ conversion gives you total control over your Aga. With dual controls for the hotplates and digitally controlled oven temperature, the ElectricKit conversion gives you infinite flexibility whilst retaining the traditional looks and all-important radiant heat cooking method we all love.

The ElectricKit ‘Classic’ system is a revision of the original ElectricKit system which has been on the market over 13 years, it includes extra oven elements for faster heat up times, and a boost feature for the bottom oven so it can be used as a second roasting oven. The hotplates have had modifications to allow for quicker response times, and the control panel has had a cosmetic upgrade.

Cooking with the ElectricKit

The ElectricKit Classic cooking experience still retains the familiar radiant heat cast iron cooking that we all love about our Agas. The difference being the ElectricKit Classic system gives independent control over the hotplates and ovens and fast heat up times allowing for a greater degree of flexibility.

Top right oven – this is fully controllable in degree Celsius and takes approx. 1 hour to heat up to roasting from cold. With elements being positioned in between the two ovens, as well as above, the floor of the top oven runs hotter than in a conventional Aga. This is great for pizzas and blind baking, or for frying with a pan or tray directly on the oven floor. A grid shelf can be used to raise the dish off the floor if the direct heat is undesirable.

The oven can be left at roasting temperature like a conventional Aga or it can be turned down / off when not required. A digital temperature display is used to adjust the desired temperature and display the current oven temperature.

Bottom right oven – the temperature of this oven is proportionate to the top oven, running around a third lower. With the top oven at roasting temperature 240C the bottom oven will be around 160⁰, or when the top oven is at baking temperature around 180⁰ the bottom oven will be around 125⁰. The bottom right hand oven can also be used for grilling by placing dishes on the top set of runners utilising the additional radiant heat from the top of the bottom oven.

Bottom Oven Boost – The bottom right hand oven also has a ‘boost’ feature which brings in an additional element built into the floor of the oven to boost it above its normal running temperature. This allows the oven to be used as a second roasting oven, or to provide the extra heat for even baking. Turning on the boost element when heating up the Aga from cold will reduce the heat up times of the bottom oven. The bottom oven boost is controlled from an additional thermostat on the control panel.

Left hand ovens (four oven Models) – These are independently controlled from the right-hand ovens and will function in the same way as a conventional Aga – top oven for simmering and bottom oven for warming. The oven will heat up to full temperature in approximately 60 -85 minutes. A lower temperature can be used if the ovens are only required for keeping food warm or for background heat. The warming plate on the top functions in the same way as a conventional Aga and is great for keeping food warm while serving.

Hotplates: The ElectricKit system features two independently controlled cast iron hotplates. From cold, simmering temperature is achieved after 13 minutes and boiling temperature after 19 minutes with full temperature obtained after 23 minutes. The hotplates can be left on all the time for extra heat to the room or for convenience of use (from simmering to boiling temperature takes around 5-6 minutes).Using the hotplates does not affect oven temperature.

Optional Induction Plate – The left-hand hotplate can be changed for an induction hotplate. This gives instant heat so there is no need to pre-heat the hotplate, or to leave it on when not in use. Useful for summer time use, and to keep running costs down. The induction hotplates come in two sizes, 1.6kW standard or an uprated 3kW size. Induction hobs require compatible pans. The induction hob will not give out any heat to the room, therefore if maximum radiant heat is required then the induction option may not suit.

ElectricKit Running Costs

Once converted with the ElectricKit, your ovens and hotplates can be used in any way you want, so the exact consumption figures will vary from household to household. For example; in winter for maximum heat to the room, ovens can be left on at full temperature and hotplates at simmering temperatures, this will provide conventional Aga warmth. In summer time or for maximum economy, the ovens could be turned right down or off when not in use and hotplates used on demand. The ideal settings will quickly be found for every situation.

The table shows the hourly consumption of the various parts of the system. As of January 2025, the cost of keeping the ovens on a 2-oven model running at full temperature 24/7 would be around £18.79 per week.

Energy Consumption (continuous running)
• Top oven ‘Slumber’ 180C = 0.45 kWh
• Top oven ‘Roast’ 240C = 0.56 kWh
Bottom oven boost off – bottom oven will run around a 1/3 lower than the top oven temperature
• Top oven ‘Roast’ 240C & Bottom oven boost on ‘Baking’ 190C = 0.65kWH Bottom oven boost on - more heat to the room
• Hotplate ‘Simmer’ with lid down = 0.15 kWh
• Left Hand ovens ‘on’ = 0.20kWh* *estimated

Figures are for continuous running and exclude initial warm up.

EleckricKit Installation

ElectricKit conversions usually take a day, and can be combined with re-enamelling or top plate refurbishment. Prior to conversion, a suitable electric supply will need to be installed. In most cases this needs to be a dedicated 32-amp supply from the consumer unit. Some models can be run from smaller supplies if necessary. Timed control can be incorporated into the supply. Please contact us for more information.

The conversion process involves a full strip down of the Aga. As approved ElectricKit installers, we remove the firebox and burner from your Aga and rebuild the Aga, installing the electric elements and control gear. All the insulation is replaced with high efficiency ceramic blanket to super insulate the whole Aga. Ovens can be converted to room venting, or can continue to vent into the existing flue, or external venting system.

Aga 13amp Conversion

The traditional ‘always on’ conversion (also known as the 13amp conversion) allows you to retain that all familiar Aga experience whilst enabling the use of green renewable energy to power you Aga. Utilising a 2.5kW electric element in place of the existing oil or gas burner, combined with a complete insulation upgrade, the energy requirement of your Aga will be cut in half - no longer will you lose 50% of the heat energy from the burner up the chimney. As no chimney is required, you can relocate your Aga anywhere in the kitchen. With options for external or room venting, the 13amp conversion gives simple flexibility.

Your Aga will operate in the same way as it did when running on oil or gas - the ovens and hotplates will always be up to temperature and ready to cook. Heat up times are around 6 hours from cold, so the Aga can be turned off if not required for a few days. The ovens can be operated at a lower temperature if required, this saves energy and reduces heat output to the room – ideal for summertime use. This conversion is ideal for anyone who wants to utilise power from their own renewables such as solar PV, wind turbines or hydroelectric to offset the running costs of the 13amp Aga.

Our ‘always on’ 13amp conversions include fully re-insulating your Aga with super-efficient ceramic blanket and fitting an internal air recirculation system. Unlike some of the more basic 13amp conversions and early electric models this ensures the ovens and hotplates get up to the correct temperatures and running costs are kept down.

The ‘always on’ 13amp conversion is suitable for all purpose-built Oil and Gas Aga’s as well as some solid fuel models. If you have an Aga that cannot be converted then have a look at our ElectricKit conversion, or speak to us about options for exchanging your solid fuel Aga. Our always on 13amp conversion is also suitable as an upgrade from the early and inefficient 13amp conversions as a means of reducing energy consumption.

Conversions are usually done in the space of a day, and can be combined with re-enamelling or top plate refurbishment. The Aga will need a dedicated 13amp fused supply. Please contact us for more information.
